TVB’s programme ‘Big City Shop’ introduced the Association’s new technology to support sensory integration training

The 2 hosts of TVB’s programme "Big City Shop” visited the Association's Sensory Integration Training and Professional Development Centre and found out how the Smart Monitoring System-Sensory Integration (SMS-SI) developed by the Association uses innovative technology to assist occupational therapists in collecting the data of the service users during training and combined with clinical observation and analysis, further strengthens the effect of sensory integration treatment.

The Association's Sensory Integration Training and Professional Development Centre obtained funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation again in January 2022 to develope and install the SMS-SI. SMS-SI comprises various sensor devices, including Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) to measure dynamic data such as the movement amplitude and speed of training equipment, receivers to measure environmental data such as luminosity and volume, and Electrodermal Activity (EDA) to measure skin impedance or conductivity that can display changes in service users' arousal levels under different training conditions. The EDA looks like a smartwatch and the Association was the first NGO in Hong Kong to develope and apply it to sensory integration training, allowing therapists to instantly understand the changes in service users' status in response to different trainings and adjust treatment strategies.

SMS-SI is also equipped with a skeletal tracking function that uses artificial intelligence (AI) for visual recognition to display the service user's posture control during training, allowing the therapist to understand the service user's body and movement coordination. In addition, the system will integrate the collected data to analyse the level of participation and scope of activities of service users in the sensory integration training room.

Ms Cherrie TAM, the Senior Occupational Therapist and Chief Programme Officer of the Association, explained in the programme how the SMS-SI helps the therapeutic training for children with special needs. And Mr. NG Tin Yau, host of the programme, tried the training equipment and demonstrate the actual operation of the SMS-SI.
